What should I complete first: the Portfolio or the Appraisal?
SARD's Appraisal consists of two parts: the Portfolio and the Appraisal form.
We strongly recommend that you complete the Portfolio first, then move to the Appraisal form as per Section 1 (Appraisal Info) of the Appraisal. The Portfolio can be opened directly from Dashboard or by clicking on the Portfolio tab/progress bar on the left within the Appraisal.
The Portfolio acts as a repository of evidence (documents) for the Appraisal. Once you upload evidence to a Portfolio section, it will be carried over to a corresponding section of the Appraisal form as per the sentence in green. For example, evidence added to Section 9 (CPD, QIA and Feedback) of the Portfolio will be visible in Section 9 (CPD, QIA, and feedback from colleagues and patients, including compliments) of the Appraisal:

Please mind that the Portfolio sections in the above screenshot may appear differently for you. This is because the layout of the Portfolio depends on your organisation and your role within it.
When you move to the Appraisal form upon completing the Portfolio, you will notice that the information provided in the Portfolio already shows in the Appraisal form, making the task easier.
Another major advantage of uploading evidence to a regularly maintained Portfolio is the possibility to retain it for the next Appraisal. It can be done either by ticking the 'Keep Evidence for Next Appraisal' box or by setting expiration date. This feature was also designed with speeding up the process in mind.
Some medical practitioners prefer to complete the Appraisal form first, and do the Portfolio second. In theory this is fine, assuming that all the required information including evidence was provided in the Appraisal form. If you are 100% sure that this is the case, please mark the Portfolio sections as either 'Complete', 'In Progress' or 'Not Applicable'. Otherwise you will not be able to submit the Appraisal to your appraiser as explained in this article.
